For general contractors and remodelers · Pro coming soon

Every jobsite photo filed by job, from the walk-through to the final draw

By , developer of InspectCam · Published · Last updated

InspectCam Pro is a construction photo app built around the job. Every photo you take files into the job you're on, stamped with the date, time and address. Your crew works the same jobs on their own Android phones, and on Team and Business, subs send photos in by QR code without installing anything. The scope and sign-offs come out of that one job, and draw reports from a Draw inspection job at the same address. Pro is coming soon; the camera, with its light already on, is free on Google Play today.

A remodel throws off photos for months: walk-through, demo, open walls, the permit card, deliveries, the punch list. They end up scattered across the owner's camera roll, the lead's phone and a group text with the subs, until the inspector, the client or the bank asks for one and somebody starts scrolling.

Start every job from the general contractor template

Choose the job before you start shooting, and everything you take lands in it, with the client, address, job type and notes on one card. Allow location and the camera picks the job you're standing at, if you've taken photos for it there before; where two or more jobs share the spot, the job chip asks “Which job?” until you choose, and one tap changes it. Pro's ready-made General contractor / renovation template switches on before and after pairs, findings and the scope of work, and adds a short shot list.

The shots are Front of property, Work area before, Progress, Work area after, Materials and Permit posted. None is required out of the box. Flag the shots your crew can't skip and give each a one-line tip; until they're taken, the job page shows them under Still needed. Each shot is also a category, and a photo can carry more than one, so a tap on Materials on the job page shows every Materials photo the day the wrong tile shows up. Once added, the template is yours to change.

Scope, contract and the signed go-ahead

The scope of work lives on the job: a few lines on what the work covers, with the contract or plans attached as pictures or PDFs (only a PDF's first page prints). It goes near the front of the client's report, right after the cover and the job details.

Before demo, the homeowner signs a work authorization on your phone with a finger. Switch it on in your copy of the template under More sections, with the certificate of completion for the last day. The default wording is written for water-damage jobs, so add your own once in Settings; the job drops in your company name, the client, the address and the day's date.

What was signed is stored word for word with the signer's name and the date, time and time zone, and editing your wording later never touches a document already signed. InspectCam records that a signing happened; whether it makes a binding contract where you work is something to check with your own lawyer.

Before the drywall goes up

The photos a remodeler needs most are the ones nobody can retake: open walls the day before insulation. Where the drain runs, where the grab-bar blocking went. A year later, when the homeowner hangs a TV or a plumber chases a drip, that photo is the only way back inside the wall.

Outside both-cameras mode, Pro prints the date, time, street address and GPS coordinates as a thin strip across the bottom of every photo and video you take: what the phone reports at that moment, a record of the job rather than a certificate. Say no to location and it stamps the date and time only, and the camera won't pick the job for you.

When a photo lands in the job, a small EDIT thumbnail appears in the corner: tap it to number the problem spots with arrows and circles in five colors and say what each number means, or ignore it and keep shooting. The original photo never changes. Anything you flag internal only, whether a photo, a video or a finding, stays with your team and never shows up in what the client gets.

Dark cavities and crawl spaces: the free camera

9:05 0:14 PHOTO VIDEO AUTO 1× 2× Light on

Under all of this is the InspectCam camera, free on Google Play today. It opens with the phone's light already on, for a wall cavity through a cut-out, a crawl space from the door or an attic past the hatch. The light stays on through a short video, and on the Pixel 6a we tested, through a still photo too. Zoom in with the wide and close presets your phone supports.

Your music keeps playing — even while you record video. If your phone gets very hot, Android may switch the light off to protect it. That's a safeguard, not a fault. It's the phone's own camera; InspectCam doesn't connect to borescopes. Photos from the free camera save to the phone; filing them into jobs is Pro, coming soon.

The office and the field on one company account

The plan's owner runs the company account and brings in project managers and leads with a short invite code: Duo adds one more person, Team holds 5 and Business 10. Report details, the status list, what the stamp shows and the report numbering are set once for the company, so two PMs never issue the same report number.

Everyone on a company job sees the same photos, notes, scope and signatures, and edits merge field by field instead of overwriting each other. Company jobs also go up to your company's cloud storage, on Wi-Fi unless you allow mobile data, and each person can sign in on a computer and download the jobs they can see, one file at a time or a whole job at once. For now, everyone on the account needs an Android phone; the iPhone app is coming soon, with Pro included.

Subs send photos by QR code, with no app and no account

With Team or Business, a single tap on the job creates a QR code for every trade on your list (electrician, plumber, HVAC, drywall and the rest), plus one for other trades. Tape the printed sheet inside the door, or text or email each trade their link.

The electrician points the phone's camera at their code, and the browser opens a page for uploading before and after photos and short videos. Nothing to install, no account. The photos land in the Electrician folder of your job, labeled as uploaded via link. The page must stay open until the upload finishes.

Signed in free, your electrician sees what they sent plus anything you've put in the Electrician category, like your own rough-in shots before the inspector comes. Tick Hide from trades, or internal, on anything a sub shouldn't see; your client's details, notes, prices, findings and reports never reach them. Turn on Show the whole job when the drywaller needs to see what the plumber left in the wall. A job's codes close when you mark it Completed. The trade photo drop starts at Team; Duo doesn't include it.

Closing out: before and after, the report, the signature

Pair the Work area before shot with its Work area after, and the full report prints them on a page of their own, one above the other at the same size, with each photo's time, note and marks.

The report is a PDF under your company name, with your logo, contact details, license number and a permanent report number. Photos print grouped by category, such as by room, with their date, time, notes and marks; a photo in two categories prints under both, with one photo number. A status such as Repair, Monitor or Done makes a workable punch list. The last page carries one small “Generated with InspectCam” line.

When the walls open on something nobody priced, like rot under the old tub, write it up as a finding with your recommendation. Findings print in an inspection layout with only the photos attached to them, so give that write-up its own job. At the final walk-through the homeowner signs the certificate of completion, which prints on a page of its own.

Send the report as a file, or as a link: from a company job's full report, your client gets a link that opens the report in their browser, where they can download the PDF. Stop sharing takes the link down. The link carries smaller copies of your photos, not the full-size ones.

Draw inspections for construction loans

When a construction loan pays for the job in draws, each request needs photos tied to the budget. Pro's Draw inspection template puts the lender, loan number and draw number on the job, marks a Front of property photo as required (tip: “Show the house number, every visit”) and switches on the draw schedule, invoices and receipts, a lien waiver to sign and the scope of work.

Attach invoices and receipts as pictures or PDFs. The lien waiver has no default wording, because many states have their own form: add your company's once (the job can fill in the lender, loan and draw numbers and this draw's amount), and the contractor signs it on the phone. Its legal effect is a question for your own legal advice.

The draw report carries the lender, loan and draw numbers on its cover, and Start next draw sets up the next visit with every line starting where this one left off. Amounts are in US dollars, and nothing connects to a lender's system: you send the report yourself.

Questions contractors ask

Is any of this free today?

Yes, the camera. InspectCam is free on Google Play now and opens with the phone's light already on. Job folders, the stamp, markup, reports, signatures, the crew account and the trade photo drop are Pro, which is coming soon in the same app.

Can I keep some photos away from my subs?

Yes. On Team and Business, a sub who signs in sees their own photos and any of yours you've put in their trade's category. Mark a photo Hide from trades, or internal, and no trade sees it. Internal photos, videos and findings also stay out of the client's report.

What a plumber sees after signing in free, on Team and Business. Switch on Show the whole job and they also see the other trades' photos and the job's status.

Can the homeowner sign on my phone?

Yes. Pro has a work authorization for the start of the job and a certificate of completion for the end, each signed with a finger in your company's wording and saved with the signer's name, date, time and time zone. The app records the signing but doesn't certify it, so ask your own legal adviser what your state requires.

Does a stamped photo show when a wall was closed up?

Not on its own. Pro's stamp prints what the phone reports at the shutter: the date, time, street address and GPS coordinates. A rough-in photo stamped the day before insulation is a dated record of what was in that wall; how much weight it carries is up to the people you show it to.

Can I use it for construction loan draw requests?

Yes, with Pro's Draw inspection template. The lender, loan and draw numbers go on the job, the app works out each budget line's share of the draw from the percent done, and the draw report carries those numbers on its cover. Nothing connects to a lender's system, so you send the report yourself.

Pro is coming soon and can't be bought yet, so some details here may still change. Everything else Pro does is on the InspectCam Pro page.

Pro for other trades: home inspections, rental move-in and move-out and water damage restoration, or see who InspectCam is for.
