Do USB borescopes work with an iPhone? No — and here's Apple saying so

No. USB borescopes do not work with any iPhone, including USB-C models from the iPhone 15 onward. Apple supports external UVC cameras on iPads with USB-C only — iPhone is deliberately excluded, and no app can work around it. On iPhone, use a Wi-Fi borescope instead. Any Android phone with USB OTG reads USB scopes directly.
The question is commonly answered with qualifications. Products are listed as "iOS compatible" when the compatible part of the kit is a Wi-Fi module rather than the USB probe, and answers written before the iPhone had a USB-C port are still in circulation.
Apple has stated its position directly.

Asked on Apple's developer forums whether external USB video class cameras could be used on iPhone, an Apple engineer replied:
"External UVC devices are only supported on iPads with USB C connectors."

UVC — USB Video Class — is the standard a USB borescope uses to present itself as a camera. If iOS on iPhone does not enumerate UVC devices, then no borescope, adapter or app will produce an image on one. Apple's statement scopes the support to iPads with USB-C connectors.
The single biggest source of confusion since the iPhone 15 is the assumption that a USB-C port means USB-C peripherals. It doesn't. The port is the same shape as the iPad's and carries the same physical protocol, but the software layer that would accept a UVC camera is present on iPadOS and absent on iPhone.
Your USB-C scope will plug into an iPhone 15, 16 or 17 perfectly. It will draw power. Its LEDs may even light. You will not get a picture.

Two qualifications apply to the Android rows. The scope has to be UVC-compliant — some models use a proprietary protocol and work only with the maker's own app. And the cable has to carry data; many bundled cables carry power only. Both are covered on the Android troubleshooting page.
So what do you actually do?
If you must use an iPhone: buy a Wi-Fi scope
A Wi-Fi borescope has a battery-powered transmitter that creates its own wireless network. The iPhone joins that network and views the stream through the maker's app. No USB is involved, so Apple's restriction does not apply. This is the only approach that works on iPhone.
The trade-offs:
- Latency. A visible lag between moving the probe and seeing it move — usually a fraction of a second, occasionally worse. Fine for looking, irritating for fishing a cable through a cavity.
- A battery to charge. The transmitter is a device that runs flat, typically after a couple of hours.
- App quality. You're locked to the manufacturer's iOS app with no alternative, and in this category those apps are often years out of date.
- Interference. Metal structures, plant rooms and dense 2.4 GHz environments degrade the link exactly where you most need it.
If you already own a USB scope: use an Android phone
An Android phone with USB OTG reads a UVC scope directly over the cable — no transmitter battery, no pairing, and no perceptible latency. A spare Android phone used only as a scope viewer needs neither a SIM nor a data plan for this.
If you're buying now and own an iPhone
The Wi-Fi model is the only one that will work. Check the last-updated date of the seller's iOS app before buying: an app that is no longer maintained can stop working after an iOS update, and there is no alternative app for a proprietary scope.

Claims you'll see that aren't true
"This adapter makes USB borescopes work on iPhone"
No adapter can. An adapter changes the connector, not what iOS is willing to enumerate. Apple's Camera Adapter passes still images and video from cameras that speak the photo-transfer protocol; a borescope is a live UVC video device, which is a different thing entirely.
"It says iOS compatible on the box"
Usually true of the package, not the USB probe — because a Wi-Fi module is in the box too, or because the seller means iPad. Read which specific part of the kit the iOS claim attaches to.
"It'll work once Apple adds support"
USB-C shipped on the iPhone in 2023 and the restriction remains in place as of the last-updated date above. Apple has not announced a change. Treat any purchase as depending on current behaviour, not future behaviour.

Usually a Wi-Fi model, or an iPad. If you have a documented case of a USB UVC borescope producing live video on a stock iPhone, send it in and this page will be corrected with the date of the change.
Questions people ask
Does the iPhone 15's USB-C port work with USB cameras?
Not with UVC cameras, which is what borescopes are. Apple has stated that external UVC devices are supported only on iPads with USB-C connectors. The iPhone's port is physically identical and will supply power, but iOS will not open the video stream.
Can any app make a USB borescope work on iPhone?
No. The limitation is at the operating-system level, below anything an app is allowed to touch. Any App Store listing claiming to do this is either targeting iPad or referring to Wi-Fi scopes.
